Why I’m Underemployed
I didn’t realize how unprotected that lack of a formal accommodation plan left me until I joined the workforce.
I announced I’m Going Back to the Service Industry in February 2022. I wrote that I wanted to find a career path that allowed me to be the authentic version of myself, but I didn’t tell the whole story.
I want a job that challenges me and utilizes all of my skills. I want to be celebrated for my writing, public speaking, and critical thinking. But I haven’t found a job that celebrates my strengths and supports me in my weaknesses. And I do have weaknesses.
I’m updating my narrative now. But, first, I’m explaining the considerations that went into my decision to be underemployed because my considerations are the same considerations that force other dedicated employees to choose underemployment.
I’m Underemployed
I graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Minor in Creative Writing. But not only do I have a degree, I also competed on a traveling debate team for three years, worked a service job for 30 hours each week while maintaining a full class schedule, and interned in two legal offices.
