I was Stood Up on my Sixteenth Birthday.

If you haven’t heard The Moment I Knew by Taylor Swift… then I must ask if you live under a rock? If you are living under a rock, then you wouldn’t know that Jake Gyllenhaal allegedly stood up Taylor Swift on her 21st birthday.

Swift captured the moment exactly the way I experienced it. I was standing in my black and gold prom dress with no one to impress. My mom rented out the event hall in a historic high school. School friends and well-meaning aunts were everywhere asking when they could meet this boy they heard so much about. So, of course, I told them he would— not be at the party.

I smoothed down my synthetic dress and smiled.

“He couldn’t make it,” I said.

Each person said the party wasn’t over, so there was still time for him to make an appearance. But I knew.

I looked for him when I made my grand entrance. But, instead, I was hugged by five different people. Each time I glanced over their shoulder, hoping to see him. If he was going to be there, then he would be there for my entrance. (Mostly, because he didn’t have a car and would have needed a ride there.)

I’m Not Too Fond of Birthday Parties.
